BUDAPEST - HUNGARY

The border between Slovakia and Hungary. Completely featureless. Don't know how they decided where to put it?!

PROBLEMS WITH THE LANGUAGE

Having dialled in the address of our hotel we sat back and enjoyed our drive towards Budapest. When we were directed to leave the motorway 15kms before our destination I thought "that's odd but perhaps the motorway goes to the airport or something and anyway a lot of vehicles were with us". Then the road got smaller and rougher and twistyer with less and less traffic going our way. By this time it was obvious a mistake had been made but we had gone so far there wasn't much point in turning back. We could always rely on Beryl to get us to the right place once reprogrammed. Eventually we ended up in a very nice leafy suburb of Budapest which we would never have had the pleasure of visiting if we'd understood how they write addresses in Hungary.

Heroes Square in Budapest. Our hotel is a short walk from here.

Saw this exhibition in Canberra.

A bunch of revelling lads. Not showing respect for memorial.

Saw a few of these. Probably how the lads became revellers!

Former palace now Agricultural museum beyond boating lake.

This is 50 Euros worth of local "forints". Need a calculator for bus fare!

  Cathy beside the Danube.

Artwork. Looks like shoes which have been fished from the river.

Parliament Building.

Something big going on.

Hungary's Prime Minister has just been elected for a third term and was giving his inaugural speech to the nation from here today. We have just caught them packing up.

Police protecting a memorial from protesters. Not sure what the issue was but to do with the "Holocaust" being denied.

Catholic Cathedral.

Girl dancing in the forecourt. Stretch Limo in background was for a wedding.

Great meal (mine was Caesar Salad with roast Chicken). All this with another small beer and tip included came to 5000 forints, about 16 Euros or $A 20

The beer pedal cart setting out from ouside our restaurant.

Down to the underground.

Try to figure out where you are going from that lot!

This is a ticket office actually on the platform.

Back to Heroes Square where there was a gathering of illuminated bikes.

The palace floodlit.

There is a very large lake in Hungary which I didn't know about, called Balaton. Nearly 100km long and 10 - 15 km wide. We took a detour to have a look.
