UK VISIT 2019

ROSCOFF TO PLYMOUTH 9 JUL 2019

Beautiful weather. Millpond crossing.

Plymouth breakwater.

Plymouth Hoe.

My favourite gripe. Scruffy wharf to welcome ship. Small landscaped area as you approach customs shed now overgrown with weeds. No photo as could be sensitive area.

Indication of prevailing mood perhaps?!

Holding forth at 100 years plus! Mothers sister, Joan.

Not so agile as last year but she is recovering from a chest infection picked up during the winter.

I was sitting alone with Joan when one of those Marketing or otherwise nuisance calls came in. She picked up the phone, listened, then carefully put it back down again without speaking. A few moments later she says "There must be some stupid people about who would fall for that".

I don't think we need worry about Aunty being diddled out of her pension!

12 July 2019

The sun is shining here in the UK and the summer spirit is about.

Sport: Competitions are everywhere. Wimbledon is in full swing and Federer and Nadal meet this afternoon in the men's semi final. Serena seems to be unstoppable and meets Halep tomorrow in the Women's Final. The English cricket team have just beaten Australia convincingly by 8 wickets in the One Day International series. I don't think they can believe it themselves! The World netball championships are about to start. All this after the set back in the Womens' Soccer world Cup where England faded to fourth after much expectation they would win the Final, taken, of course, by team USA.

Update: Djokovich beat Federer in the final in a Wimbledon record long time of 6.5 hours or so. We didn't know that England were playing New Zealand at cricket on free-to-air television in a nail biter at the same time (It would have been a relief to switch back and forth). The scores were equal at the end of the match but England were declared victors after some complicated count back.
Also the Formula 1 British Grand Prix was on at the same time!

Brexit: With all this going on I don't think many people are particularly interested who is going to be the new Prime Minister in the Tory party elections shortly. (The result will be known on 21st July) The impression I get is that it won't change anything.

You can sense why it is so many people voted for Brexit. Those foreigners and their languages are in the "too hard" basket for them. Those of us who moved away from this environment and now have family connections all over the world struggle to accept the closed minds and worry that Britain will become sidelined. If Boris gets in it is almost a surety that Britain will drop out of the EU with no deals in October. What they seem to forget is that there are no friends in the commercial world and Britain will have trouble making a living once they break away from the European family.

Coming from Australia I don't think Commonwealth countries will go out of their way to help. Since we moved there 52 years ago the percentage of Australians with British Heritage has shrunk considerably. In fact a large number have other European connections which is another reason not to leave.
